Using the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) when trading in short-term time frames is highly effective and simple. One common strategy for a bullish trader is to wait for a clean test of VWAP rising slope, then enter long. On the other side, a bearish trader wait for a clean test of VWAP dropping slope, then enter short.

The VWAP can also help traders gain insight into where the momentum is at a specific time. For example, assume a trader was short because there was constant selling pressure and the price failed to break above the VWAP multiple times. If price reverses and has a clean breakout above the VWAP, the trader should look to cover shorts because the momentum has shifted to the buy side.
When the distribution becomes skewed so the large area is toward the bottom or top; it is not normal and usually they are referred to as imbalanced distributions and their tails are considered extensions. It is the first directional piece of information we get from the profile.

As the profile develops throughout the trading session, volume will start to develop in one half of the distribution. This movement towards one side of the market be it volume or time is called Skewness.

The way to compute skewness is to draw a line half way through the distribution. More volume in the top half of the distribution yields a “p” shape, which favors higher prices. More volume in the bottom half of the distribution forms a “b” shape, which favors lower prices. This skewness is the final information to complete direction idea.

If you get the direction right, while more analysis can lead to better trade location, the majority of the profits come from getting the right direction, not from picking up few ticks from poor location. When the direction is not clear, one trick profile traders use is to combine the previous daily distribution to see if it shows a “p”, “b” or “D” shape.
Two-part BBC documentary series which goes inside the fast and fiercely competitive world of financial traders to meet the men and women who play the markets in London, New York, Chicago and Amsterdam. The film offers a rare, personal portrait of what life is like for the people who do this lucrative but relentless job, against a backdrop of non-stop news, globalised markets and the rise of ultra-fast computers capable of placing millions of trades at a time.

London day traders Will and Piers use their expertise to train others in the art of making money from tiny moves in the markets. But they warn their new trainees it is going to be far harder to master the psychological and emotional skills needed for trading than the technicalities. Manhattan hedge fund manager Karen believes that money is power and making it is fun, as she juggles two sets of twins, a busy social calendar and her $200-million fund. Bob has spent more than three decades yelling out his trades and jostling for position on Chicago's cattle futures trading floor, but now he thinks it may be time wean himself off his trading addiction. Ultimately, it is a story of money, desire and emotion.
The new breed of trader, the British men and women who play the financial markets from their kitchens, sofas and bedrooms. Thanks to online trading technology, anyone with an internet connection and some cash to spare can attempt to reap the rich rewards that can come from trading. This documentary charts the real-time trading ups and downs, dreams and disappointments of a handful of Britain's 'retail traders'.

Mother-of-three Jane could hardly be less like the archetypal professional City trader. She squeezes currency trading in between the school run and her work as a nurse. Justyn and Akil are ambitious young men from Birmingham, who are convinced that trading will be their ticket to lavish lifestyles. Rene gave up a successful career as an antiques dealer for a new existence as a trader, and he is undeterred despite seven years of struggling to break even.

The home traders are united by a desire to take control of their lives and their own financial destinies. But the odds are stacked against them, 90% of retail traders will not make a consistent profit.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141192815370358651.post-41480666524859969782015-05-18T18:46:00.000-04:002016-10-31T07:23:29.257-04:00About Algorithms
Algorithmic trading (automated trading, black-box trading, or simply algo-trading) is the process of using computers programmed to follow a defined set of instructions for placing a trade in order to generate profits at a speed and frequency that is impossible for human traders.

The defined sets of rules are based on timing, price, quantity or any mathematical model. Apart from profit opportunities for the trader, algo-trading makes markets more liquid and makes trading more systematic by ruling out emotional human impacts on trading.

The greatest portion of present day algo-trading is high frequency trading (HFT), which attempts to capitalize on placing a large number of orders at very fast speeds across multiple markets and multiple decision parameters, based on pre-programmed instructions.

High-frequency trading (HFT) firms represent 2% of the trading firms, but account for 73% of all trading volume. HFT has been a subject of public focus since the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission stated that HFT contributed to volatility in the 2010 Flash Crash.

On this review, let me tell you what order flow trading is not. Order Flow Trading is not technical analysis or fundamental analysis, although both of those certainly do play a part in order flow analysis. Why? Because technical and fundamental analysis do not always move the market because they do not always generate the necessary order flow to move the market.

Sometimes they can move the market, and other times they cannot. Technical and fundamental analysis are not the foundation of every market. Order flow and liquidity is the foundation of every market.

Order Flow trading seeks to correct the deficiencies in both technical and fundamental analysis in order to come up with high probability trading based on the very foundations of every market: order flow and liquidity. It's the most profitable way to trade as long as you're willing to learn the art of order flow trading.

Enter a world where pandemonium reigns and reckless ambition rules: the trading floors in the financial canyons of downtown Chicago. Here, men use strange hand signals to buy and sell everything from pork belly to soybeans while wearing the weight of our complex economy on their shoulders - along with their neon jackets.

It's a physical, bruising place, one where a slight gain creates heroes, rich beyond what their high school educations should ever afford. But the wrong move on the wrong day can ruin lives. At a time when millions have lost fortunes in the fickle stock market and fear abounds about the faltering financial system, "Floored" is an honest look behind the curtain of the trading floor that few have ever seen.

Floored captured this sea change that turned the world upside down for many who had been extremely successful on the floor but couldn’t, or just didn’t want to, make the move to computerized trading. No doubt there are many success stories, but this is not their story.

For the most part, the movie tells the tale of a group of floor traders who describe in their own words how their world got smaller. In a business where Darwinism is a basic tenet, this movie shows the stark reality of what happened to those who couldn’t adapt.

Many younger traders, of course, are hip to the new technology, but “Floored” isn’t interested in them; it’s the old-schoolers on the way out who are its focus. The stories of this dying breed are fascinating.

Among them is that of Mike Walsh, a foulmouthed, barrel-chested floor trader with a big house and a taste for hunting big game in Africa; Kenny Ford, a gruff 51-year-old vigorously but vainly opposed to e-trading; and Jeff Ansani, who took a colossal loss in one trade in 1994 and is now a mere clerk and divorced father encouraging a son to enter the market but to learn computers too.

These are brawny, profane, beer-drinking, cigar-smoking men, some prosperous, others breaking or broken. Their turf, like Chicago, is tough and passionate: a trading floor, fast vanishing under their feet.

A great movie called Moneyball is really all about baseball, a true story about two guys Bille Bean and Peter Brand, who developed a system for selecting a winning team that cost substantially less than millonaire teams like the New York Yankees would spend. The thing behind this story was that not only did they understand that some players were undervalued and bought these players, but they had the courage to stick with their system in the face of a string of successive losses, despite the world thinking they were crazy.

It’s much like trading in that sence, as once you have a system that you have devised and backtested, you have to have belief in it and trade it, even when you have those periods of losses. Armed with the statistical knowledge, the trader might gain additional confidence in his trade idea and might even trade it more aggressively. Knowing what to expect based on precedent—and then seeing if the market actually follows its historical tendencies—helps prepare the minds of discretionary traders for a variety of market scenarios.

As example, I know from my statistical studies that 70% of the time, the balanced markets tend to revert back to their value (BTV), especially under conditions of relatively low momentum. Another stat shows that 75% of the time, the imbalanced markets tend to seek balanced targets (PBT), especially under conditions of relatively high momentum.

Another study shows that if a market opens around previous value area and then remains for two half-hour periods into value, there is an 70% chance that market will rotate all the way to the other side of value (VAR). One more stat shows that if a market prints a new record high at ETH, there's 80% chance that record high can be revisited during RTH.

These are some statistical E-Mini SP500 numbers, that can provide guidelines for discretionary traders:

-80% of the time, one side of overnight (ON) range is tested.
-75% of the time, one side of prior day range (PD) is broken.
-78% of the time, one side of initial balance (IB) is broken.
-65% of the time, the average gap (6p) has been closed.
-80% of the time, the half gap (50% RTH gap) is tested.
-18% of the RTH days are Trend days (Multimodal Profiles).
-72% of the RTH days are Normal days (Bimodal/Trimodal).
-10% of the RTH days are Neutral days (Inside ON Range).

Remember that context is extremely important, don't try to use any statistic as a rigid, systematic trading rule, blindly applied to all market conditions. Statistical analysis provides an hypothesis only; current market action will either support or refute these hypothesis.
If you play golf, probably you read great books written by Dr. Bob Rotella like “Golf is Not a Game of Perfect”. The thoughts and ideals in this books could change your whole perspective on golf and into other areas of your life.

As you mature as a trader you will understand that trading too, like golf, is “not a game of perfect”. It is a game of ifs, buts, nearly’s, maybes. Trading is a probability based endeavor. You cannot be perfect! Trading is a business and you should treat it as such.

You can’t imagine that everything you have ever done in your business career is perfect. Don’t let your drive to be perfect keep you from enjoying and prospering in the “game” you love. You must develop this mindset! Like Dr. Rotella explains, “pick small targets” and focus like a laser on them.

Think about this. You could practice flipping a coin to come up heads every time until your hands bleed but of course you realize that you will never achieve that result. You can absolutely be the best “coin flipper” in the world and your outcome will still be 50/50 if you have a statistically significant sample size.

This analogy of course seems ridiculous but it applies to probability based trading which is the methodology that pro-traders use every single day in the selection and execution of their trades.

You can probably think for yourself about times when you have gotten out of that trade too early only to see it rocket to and perhaps beyond your profit target, or that time you got out of the market for a loss only to see it come back and go your way or maybe the time you didn’t take the trade because the set-up wasn’t quite right, or it wasn’t quite at your level, only to see it go on to be a winner.

Likewise maybe there have been times when fortune has favoured you in similar situations. The nature of markets and the nature of humans creates an environment of imperfection. Perfectionism is an admirable quality to some degree, but can often be destructive and is likely to hinder you as a trader.

Want to be the best in the world? Watch Jason Day tell his amazing life story and how he overcame emotional and physical struggles in both golf and life. A great story of perseverance, not giving up, changing your life, not doubting yourself and so much more.

Open Outcry is a fascinating look at the high-speed, high-power trading floor of Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Director Jon Else explores a hectic, noisy, seemingly chaotic workplace with his signature style and eschewing narration in favor of real-time shots that bring the viewer right into the action of the trading floor.

The show paints a compelling picture of sudden wealth, sudden disaster, and grace under pressure as traders exchange billions of dollars in futures and options contracts. It is also a portrait of an endangered environment, as digital revolution has eliminated the open outcry system at many of the world's financial exchanges.

This film portrays understandably nervous young clerks learning the open outcry trading system, with its seemingly senseless language and hand signals, hoping to one day make a fortune. The film captures this roller coaster rocketing through billions a day that makes the Merc one of the most fascinating spots on the global financial map.

Low latency is a topic within capital markets, where the proliferation of algorithmic trading requires firms to react to market events faster than the competition to increase profitability of trades. There are many factors which impact on the time it takes a trading system to detect an opportunity and to successfully exploit that opportunity, including: Distance between the exchange and the trading system.

A crucial factor in determining latency is its throughput. Data rates are increasing exponentially which has a direct relation to the speed at which messages can be processed. Low-latency systems need not only to be able to get a message from A to B as quickly as possible, but also need to be able to process millions of messages per second.

There are in practice several routers, switches, other cable links and protocol changes between an exchange and a trading system. As a result most low latency trading engines will be found physically close to the markets exchanges, even in the same building as the exchange (servers co-location hosting) to further reduce latency.

Co-location can greatly benefit traders who are running automated trading systems, from greybox to blackbox. Taking advantage of server co-location brings traders strategy as close to the exchange matching engine as possible, significantly reducing execution times, as well as the risks of multiple points of failure. With remote access to co-located servers, traders can also enjoy the freedom to trade quickly and confidently from anywhere around the globe.

The CME Group Data Center in Aurora, IL provides traders with the closest proximity possible to the CME Globex matching engine. Now with up to 10 Gbps GLink, the fastest connection to CME Globex possible. CME Aurora Dedicated Servers allocates all of the hardware resources to one trader. This provides access to much more CPU and RAM than a typical virtual machine (VM) and is ideal for the most demanding traders running automated and algorithmic system trading.

These are some of the trade management topics.

What is Trade Management?
How is it different than Risk or Money Management?
Mechanical versus Arbitrary Trade Management.
Holding for a target: How difficult could that be?

You are only as good as your last trade?
Being a smart trader and getting smart during trades.
Difference between homework and in-trade analysis.
When does it make sense to move a stop?

How important is the entry really?
Checking target location before entering.
Keeping track of what is and isn’t working.
A business that doesn't keep records isn't a business for long.

The Value Area represents the range of prices that contain 70% of a day’s trading activity. These are opening setups based on the prior day's value area and should be used after U.S. Opening (9:30 ET):

#1 Open Drive (OD)

A: When a market opens above the value area and then goes through the overnight high with volume at highs increasing, it's a bullish signal. Buy early nearest low volume node. Internals should be highly positive. The opening is dominated by initiative buying, do not trade against it.

B: When a market opens below the value area and then break through the overnight low with volume at lows increasing, it's a bearish signal. Sell early nearest low volume node. Internals should be well negative. The opening is dominated by initiative selling, do not trade against it.

#2 Open Test Drive (OTD)

A: When the market opens above the value area and remains above the value area high on the subsequent tests, it is a clearly bullish signal. Buy the high of value area. Internals should be positive. If the market begins to trade within the value area and volume increases at lows, it would be recommended to exit long positions.

B: When the market opens below the value area and remains below the value area low on the subsequent tests, it is a clearly bearish signal. Sell the low of value area. Internals should be negative. If the market begins to trade within the value area and volume increases at highs, it would be recommended to exit short positions.

#3 Open Rejection Reverse (ORR)

A: When a market opens above the value area but then fails to go through the overnight high and begins to trade back with volume at lows increasing, it is a signal of rejection. Sell the overnight high. Internals should be negative. There is a strong tendency to rotate all the way through the value area.

B: When a market opens below the value area but then fails to go through the overnight low and begins to trade back with volume at highs increasing, it is a signal of rejection. Buy the overnight low. Internals should be positive. There is a strong tendency to rotate all the way through the value area.

#4 Open Auction In/Out of Range (OAIR/OAOR)

When the market opens in/out of range within or near the value area it is showing signs of a balanced market. Trading from responsive versus initiative would be preferred. Fade the extremes of the value area. Internals should be neutral or not in trending mode.

Use market internals (ADSPD-VOLSP) to figure out strength or weakness.
Remember, don't try to use any setup as a rigid, systematic trading rule, blindly applied to all market conditions. Context is key.

Eight times per year a branch of the Federal Reserve Board, known as the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee), meets to set key interest rates. They also make decisions as to whether to increase (or decrease) the money supply, known as Quantitative Easing (QE).

The dates and the time of the FOMC meeting announcement is displayed on the Federal Reserve website.

Here is a simple strategy for trading the FOMC.

At the scheduled time of the FOMC meeting announcement, there is usually an initial big move in one direction – this is known as wave AB. This first major move is the “true” direction – i.e. where the market really wants to go. (Note: Do NOT execute any trade at this point yet).

After the initial "reaction" (wave AB), there is then a retracement of this move (wave BC) which takes the market to at least the half way back of the wave AB. This is known as the “fake” move (Wave BC).

Enter the market when the ES reaches the cluster of point C and key level (VAH-VAL-HOD-LOD-POC-HVE) with a 5 point stop and an open target. (Alternatively, you can scale in to this trade with half size, then add the remaining half after next bar high moves above entry bar high).

What follows is a big move which is in the same direction as the initial move (Wave AB). Close half your position once you have made 5 points on the trade, bring your stop to break even, and then use a trailing stop for the remaining half until AB-CD harmonic pattern has been filled.

The key is in the waiting, to play only the 3rd leg of this zig-zag move. That 3rd leg shows the real intent after the news and remember, don't try to use any setup as a rigid, systematic trading rule, blindly applied to all market conditions. Context is key.
